Sophie Munns : ‘Viviparous’’
Mid 17th Century: from Latin viviparus (from vivus ‘alive’ + parus ‘bearing’ + ous)
Invited to participate in the SAFE HARBOUR exhibition at St Johns Cathedral in Brisbane from a month late May - June the artist was asked if exploring the seeds & their life cycles of the Mangrove species of Moreton Bay might be of particular interest.
Sophie: "Moving to Brisbane in 2008 I had been so captivated by plant species and their seeds here I volunteered at the SeedLab at Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha in 2009, launching the Homage to the Seed project for a residency in the Seed Lab in 2010, a partner of the Australian Seedbank Partnership & the global Millennium Seedbank project based at Wakehurst-Kew MSB, in the UK.
Opportunities to explore, learn from, & when possible, work alongside so many individuals and projects dedicated to seed conservation science & related fields & endeavours has broadened my curiosity ever since to appreciate diverse habitats whenever, wherever possible. However, mangrove habitats seemed to remain illusive, despite frequent walks along Moreton Bay foreshores, boardwalks in Mangrove habitats & at spots on the Brisbane River where Mangroves grow, places to keep an eye on when hoping to photograph seedy finds.
“The Spectacular array of habitats found in Moreton Bay include coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, salt marshes, rocky reefs and sandy bottoms.” YET … in 2022, threat of damage to such a valuable eco-system remains critical:
“The proposed Toondah Harbour & its damaging impacts such as 40ha of reclamation, dredging & habitat destruction will have a negative impact on the ecological, social, cultural and economic values of the Moreton Bay Marine Park area.” Quote: Redlands.2030.net
Everything about mangrove species fascinated this artist - weeks researching & cross-checking information in order to piece together a clearer understanding was critical. And of course this led to taking on board the threats not just here but to other mangrove habitats around the world, and thankfully efforts being made to monitor and counter degradation of sites only becoming increasingly important for a multitude of reasons.
Discovering how in certain mangrove plants, vivipary occurs when seeds or embryos begin to develop before they detach from the parent was, in large part, the inspiration behind this painting."
