This painting comes from my 2010 Homage to the Seed Residency at Brisbane Botanic Gardens and has lived in my studio as a talisman on a special shelf for years, not hung as an artwork for sale. The title GARDEN ABSTRACT is a reflection of the way the rhythms of nature sometimes transport me to respond in an abstract way when painting. Walking the gardens in 2010 I closely observed the small details of diverse plants and seeds over the year, photographing as I walked, carrying a special permit for collecting seeds to take back to the Seed Lab and work with at home in the studio. The forms would become patterns and rhythms and take me in varying directions. This brings sky, the green of growing plants & soil together with an abstracted motif inspired by the black bean seedpod.
