4. Black Bean seed pod - Irtalie in the Bundjalung language of Northern NSW &
Castanospermum australe in Latin

Around 2005 whilst living in Newcastle I visited Brisbane, collected some of these familiar pods & started absent-mindedly drawing an abstracted version in my journal afterwards which slowly became a signature motif in my artwork.

They hold such a strong childhood memory from growing up in the Clarence River valley these pods. The bundjalung name for this species, Irtalie, came to my notice and a quote from WIKI below explains more.

This specimen was sitting in the middle of ink & brushes on my desk lately - unopened - so I gently pried it open & took a few photos.

The 1889 book ‘The Useful Native Plants of Australia’ records the common names of Castanospermum australe as “Moreton Bay Chestnut” and “Bean tree” and notes that it was called “Irtalie” by Aboriginal people of the Richmond and Clarence Rivers (New South Wales) and “Bogum” by “others of Northern New South Wales”.  Other names that have been used by Aboriginal peoples are: baway, yiwurra, junggurraa, mirrayn, ganyjuu, and binyjaalga.
